When a landlord rents a unit, they ensure that it is safe and healthy to live in. They create a “Warranty of Habitability,” or a promise that the home is safe to live in. If a home becomes unsafe to live in, renters can ask their landlords to fix the issue quickly and make their home safe again.
Examples of habitability issues that could make a home unsafe include:
Use our Rental Safety Check to see if your home is unsafe and if the landlord is responsible for fixing it.
If your home has one of the issues above your landlord needs to fix the issue. Before you take any action, let's make sure you qualify.
If your home does not have one of the issues listed above, your landlord may not be required to fix the issue.
